Another Soul Sucking Mets Defeat

What can I say that hasn’t already been said about tonight’s 9-8 loss to the Yankees?
Absolutely deplorable loss. A game that would have been a nice bounce-back from a pair of crushing defeats to the Phillies. But no.
In typical Mets fashion, it all comes crashing down. Luis Castillo dropped a routine pop-up off the bat of Alex Rodriguez with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, allowing Derek Jeter and Mark Teixeira to score, handing Francisco Rodriguez his first blown save as a Met.
The thing is, the Mets had played a crisp game before that, rallied from a few deficits. Scored off Mariano Rivera in the eighth. It was their game for the taking. And then it wasn’t.
Just when I thought I could accept the gimpy, powerless Castillo as part of the team (after last year’s debacle), he goes and pulls something like this. Is it too much to ask a major-leaguer to use two hands on a pop up? Omar Minaya has made many questionable moves, but signing a clearly declining Castillo to a four-year, $32 million deal is a true head scratcher.
The Phillies lost tonight, costing the Mets a golden opportunity to gain the game lost during this week’s series. Tomorrow, Fernando Nieve (yes, a castaway from the pitching-poor Astros) gets the start against Andy Pettitte. Joy of joys. Hope the Mets can bounce back from this catastrophic defeat. I’ll be watching regardless.
